The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.

-William Shakespeare

By the look of things, the last couple of months are unveiling a trend that shows how lawyers and other legal professionals may be replaced by smart software. Automation is the hottest world right now, and rightly so. Powerful softwares are being invented that could virtually replace and eliminate people working in the legal field.

Although the transition to the likes of “artificial intelligence” lawyers like ROSS may happen within the next 10 years or so, experienced legal professionals will have no cause for concern just yet. You see, it’s the paralegals and newbie associates that will be phased out in favor of virtually error-free associates who can process and handle far greater volumes of data than their human counterparts ever could.

Along with technologies like ROSS, the legal industry will also see a rise in the volume of practice management software that promises to give lawyers an edge in their practice management. There’s jEugene which revolutionizes the way legal documents are cross-checked for definitional mistakes; ROSS, which is the next-level AI-lawyer; and of course, all your eDiscovery already in place.

The ABA Journal’s article on legal automation discusses how over 35% of law firms nationally say that they envisage a future where legal professionals’ processes will be overtaken by smarter, faster, and more efficient machines. Now before you feel despondent and abandon ship, there’s hope still. The Wall Street Journal ran this piece on the after-effects of lawyer automation, and it doesn’t seem ALL that bad.

Here’s to a future that embraces lawyers both non-human and human.
