Think retirement. Picturing older people relaxing by the beach somewhere in Florida? Did you realize that whatever makes you relax now will be you when you retire? For us it’s chilling with pizzas, taking some selfies, and just WiFi all day long. We know, a bit jarring. The usual placid white-haired people laying in the sun, sipping on coconut cocktails and enjoying a good read is most probably not going to be any of us. For us to sustain the lifestyle that makes us happy and relaxed, we need to start actively planning for retirement.

Living in the moment is wonderful, unless you’re forgetting to plan ahead. We’re all guilty of feeling a bit too smug when it comes down to talking about our plans to retire. You see, the alarming fact is that a rising number of people are investing in the NOW and not in the LATER. This is alarming for the sole reason that in the quest to shoe off, we’re often not factoring in the future, and how we are going to sustain ourselves when time and health will be things working against us.

Attorneys are especially hard-hit when it comes down to aspects of career happiness. Apart from being one of the most depressed professionals in our industry when compared with people of other industries, we also are for the most part highly unhappy where we’re at. If you’re satisfied with your standard of living, we’re going to assume you’ve broken free of the “Golden Handcuffs” that was eloquently summed up in this article from The Simple Dollar, and have started to (or already have) your future plans down pat.

Remember that scary thing we said about people not investing in the future? Well, Forbes spells it out succinctly. In this article, up to a whopping 68% of Americans aren’t even saving for their future. That spells out a disastrous future if things aren’t set right. It’s pretty hard though, when you’re struggling to pay off ridiculously high law school debt.

You have to start somewhere. Start small. Making little changes that won’t hurt you are the only sensible ones to make. Here’s to a bright future cozy in our beds, Netflix, and unlimited WiFi. Set yourself up to retire, and everything will be ok. Someone pass the Funnyuns, please.
